2016 WORDS UNLOCKED FINALIST: “Still Close”

Poem: “Still Close”

School/Facility: Manson Youth Institution
Teacher: Ms. Belval
Poet: Jezreel

POEM TITLE: “Still Close”

I’ll be born tomorrow,

Detached from you but still close.

I’ll be crying and afraid,

But comforted by your arms.

I’ll be like that man to your left,

Loving but flawed.

I’ll learn to walk and tie my own shoes

While you smile at me growing.

You’ll watch me play sports,

As I choose my influences.

I’ll be imprisoned,

But you’ll still love me.

I’ll go to college and travel

Have a wife and kids.

I’ll be something,

Something you’ll always have wanted.

You’ll be dead,

I’ll cry and be afraid; confused and overwhelmed.

I’ll love

Love enough to let go.

I’ll be detached from you

But still close.
