POEM TITLE: ODE TO THE PRISONER

Ode to the prisoner

who was up most of the night thinking,

watching thoughts on ceilings.

Who left a dream behind this morning,

but kept a paper in his pocket.

Straight faced in the meal room

not an emotion escapes the eye.

Nothing’s changed in the yard.

Unnoticed as he blends with the time,

he feels the paper in his pocket.

Mean mugs and thick tensions

fill the day and keep reputations.

He unfolds his paper.

They won’t stare but look as he reads it.

Few understand what’s in his pocket.

Those who have done the same

know the value a paper can have.

No one talks about it

but the sentimental feelings there.

The feeling of hope in his pocket.

Ode to the prisoner

who was up most of the night thinking,

straight faced in the meal room,

who lives with the mean mugs and thick tension.

Ode to the prisoner

who carries a letter in his pocket.
